Cala Tango in Jávea

Cala Tango in Jávea

There are coves that conquer for their size and others that fall in love precisely for the opposite: for being small, hidden and difficult to reach. The Tangó cove in Jávea undoubtedly belongs to this second group. If you have come this far looking for information about this corner overlooking the cliffs of Cap de Sant Antoni, we are very happy, because we have a lot to tell you. And we can tell you something important: this place has a history as curious as its name. Join us until the end, because what you are going to discover will surprise you.

What is the Tangó cove in Xàbia and why is it so special

Let's start with the essentials. Cala Tango in Xàbia is a tiny rocky beach located at the foot of the cliffs of Cabo de San Antonio, very close to the port of Jávea. We are talking about a really small enclave, just a few dozen meters, which makes it an intimate and uncrowded corner compared to other beaches in the area.

What makes this place truly special is its surroundings. The cove is located next to the Cabo de San Antonio Marine Reserve, making it a paradise for snorkeling and scuba diving enthusiasts. Its crystal clear waters, with great visibility, and its posidonia bottoms hide spectacular marine life that justifies the visit in itself.

Now, we must be honest with you from the beginning: it is not a conventional cove. Don't come waiting for fine sand to lie in the sun for hours with the umbrella and the fridge. Cala Tango is a destination for those looking for nature, adventure and a dip in transparent waters, more than beach comfort.

The curious origin of the name of the Tango cove

Before continuing, it is worth stopping at something that we find fascinating: the reason for its name. And it is that this cove has, in fact, two names with two stories behind them.

On the one hand, it is known as Cala del Pope. This name comes from a Russian Orthodox priest who used to bathe in its waters daily. On the other hand, the name Cala Tangó alludes to an old footbridge installed in 1899 for the rescue of shipwrecked people. As you can see, two different stories for the same corner full of local tradition.

The recent history of Cala Tango that you should know

And here comes a fundamental point. Cala Tangó, as it existed for generations, is no longer the same.

For decades, this was one of the most emblematic places for the inhabitants of Jávea, who came to enjoy its calm waters. However, in January 2020 the Gloria storm hit the Alicante coast extremely hard. The strong storm destroyed a large part of the margin of the cove and, after a study by the Generalitat that confirmed the infeasibility of recovering it, in September 2022 the cove was buried with large breakwater stones to reinforce the dike.

This means that, today, bathing is not allowed in the old cove, as only the rocky part remains and there is a danger of landslides. We tell you this not to discourage you, but quite the opposite: so that your visit is well informed. Far from being completely lost, the place has found a new life.

The new viewpoint of Cala Tango

Where there was once a beach, the reinforcement works have resulted in something different but equally beautiful. With the new actions, a viewpoint has been created, a balcony overlooking the sea that offers magnificent views of Cap Prim, Cap de Sant Antoni, the old cove and, of course, the Mediterranean.

Therefore, even if you can no longer take a bath in the exact spot where that Orthodox priest bathed, you will be able to enjoy exceptional panoramic views. It is advisable to be clear about this distinction so as not to be disappointed when you arrive.

Cala Tango: how to get there step by step

We come to the question that has probably brought you here. Figuring out how to get to  Cala Tango is key to planning your visit well, so let's go into detail.

The usual way to access is by car. You must head towards the port of Xàbia and, once there, follow the inner road of the port until the end, which is where you can park. From that point you will find the indications to take the access path.

It is worth clarifying an important distinction that confuses many visitors. There is, on the one hand, the much more accessible area of Tangó beach, which starts directly from the port car park along a path next to the shore and a beach bar. And, on the other, the old cove itself, which was accessed by the PR-355 path, with a brief ascent and subsequent descent. Given the current state after the Gloria storm, the most recommended route today is the one that leads to the viewpoint and the coastal environment.

Getting to Tango Cove by kayak

There is a third way that we find particularly attractive: access by sea. Nowadays there is a company that runs kayak routes to this cove, a highly recommended option because it allows you to get to know the natural jewel that is the Cap de Sant Antoni Marine Reserve.

Paddling not only prevents you from climbing down the trail, but also turns the journey into an experience in itself, skirting the cliffs and discovering corners that are only visible from the water. Of course, keep in mind that, depending on the day, you can coincide with organized groups and find it somewhat more crowded.

Where to park to visit Cala Tango

Parking is one of the points in favor of this enclave, especially if we compare it with other coves in the south of Jávea. Next to the port of Xàbia there is an unguarded parking area, with more than a hundred spaces available.

However, in the middle of the summer season the places fill up quickly. Our recommendation is clear: get up early. Arriving early not only guarantees you a seat, but also allows you to enjoy the surroundings with greater tranquility and better light.

When to visit Cala Tangó: the best time and time

And when should you go? As with most coves on the Costa Blanca, summer and early autumn offer the best conditions, with calm seas and warm waters. In the summer months the water temperature can reach very pleasant values for bathing and snorkeling.

As for the time, we recommend you go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. In this way you will avoid both crowds and the hottest hours, since it is worth remembering that in this environment there are hardly any shaded areas where you can take shelter.

Practical tips for your visit to Cala Tango

To make your experience perfect, we want to share with you some essential recommendations:

  • Bring snorkeling equipment. It would be a shame to visit this place and not look out over its seabed.
  • Suitable footwear, such as booties, due to the rocky terrain of the access.
  • Sun protection, water and a portable umbrella, given the absence of natural shade.
  • Caution with waves and landslides, especially on windy days.
  • Respect the protected environment. Take all your waste and take care of this natural jewel for those who come after.
